Mick Ebling, the keynote speaker at this year’s American Organization of Nurse Executives’ annual meeting, has had a long, successful career as an executive producer in the film and television industry. For the last several years, though, as founder and CEO of Not Impossible Labs LLC, he has been making his most significant contributions through technological innovations in health care.
Life-Changing Improvements in Health Care
Ebling has spearheaded high-tech teams to create communication capabilities for people with complete paralysis and to provide locally-made prosthetics in the Sudan for amputee victims of war. Ebling received a 2014 Muhammad Ali Humanitarian of the Year Award and was recognized in 2015 as a Wired magazine Agent of Change. The author of Not Impossible: The Art and Joy of Doing What Couldn’t Be Done, Ebling recounts the story of how he formed and led project-based teams to achieve life-changing and long-lasting improvements in health and medical care.
One key takeaway, according to Ebling: “At the end of the day, life is project management. You have a problem, you have to figure it out.” Similarities in problem-solving between film-making and healthcare “include conceiving what that story is going to be, seeing the steps to get to that end solution, building the schedules, budgets, and teams that will work on the project to completion. Sometimes reaching a solution is simple, and sometimes it’s complicated, but the skills remain the same.”
